The Alpe d’Huez Alpe d’Huez is at 1800m with the highest peak at 3300m and boasts the most spectacular views of the Parc des Ecrins (National Park). It is a resort which offers something for everyone; a good variety of pistes in fifth largest ski area in France with of course the famous 16km black run (longest in the world) and fabulous off-piste for those looking for powder. The altitude ensures snow throughout the season and if by chance it wears a little thin Alpe d’Huez has 700 snow cannons installed. The resort has a wonderful natural advantage over other resorts, (especially appreciated by beginners) Alpe d’Huez is known as the ‘Isle de Soliel’ meaning ‘island in the sun’, its so much easier to tackle runs when the sky is a stunning blue and the sun is warming your back. Families are well catered for and the resort is child-friendly, there are several crèches were you could leave the children for a morning or longer leaving you to explore the surroundings together. We have a small team of reliable and sensible baby-sitters should you want to test the local restaurants for a romantic evening ‘en tete a tete’. For those concerned more about the nightlife - there are plenty of options; aside from the usual selection of bars and restaurants there is a jazz piano bar ‘Le Sporting’ which transforms into a nightclub in the early hours, two further nightclubs; L’Igloo and Le Cave. Underground, O’Sharkeys, The Pacific and Smithys satisfy those with a yearning to have English company a pint of Guinness and a catch-up with the important sport fixtures back at home, for those wishing to mix more with the locals Zoo Bar has a good atmosphere and great music. The restaurants really do offer something for everyone, from Indians to fondues, there is even a restaurant at 2100m, which offers live music, dancing and transport in a real piste-basher!
